Over 100 lives lost in a tragic wedding fire incident in Iraq.

Over 100 individuals lost their lives, and over 150 sustained injuries in an event hall in the northern Iraqi town of Qaraqosh when a fire erupted during a wedding, according to early reports from officials on Wednesday.

Quoting a "preliminary count," Iraq's official INA news agency reported that health authorities in Nineveh province had determined that "100 individuals had lost their lives, and over 150 had been injured in a fire at a wedding hall in Hamdaniyah," also known as the town.

This casualty count was corroborated by Saif al-Badr, a spokesperson for the health ministry, who stated that most of the injured were receiving treatment for burns or oxygen deprivation, noting incidents of overcrowding within the packed reception hall.

The Iraqi Red Crescent reported over 450 casualties but could not provide a detailed breakdown of the fatalities.

In an official statement, civil defense authorities highlighted the presence of highly flammable prefabricated panels inside the event hall that violated safety standards. The situation was further aggravated by the release of toxic gases resulting from the combustion of these plastic-containing panels.
